Deepest Fear

I read this quote the other day, and it struck me that sometimes we fear miracles. I know this sounds counterintuitive. After all, we pray for miracles to happen. We pray that the sick will be healed, that a trial will be removed, that we will find our eternal companion, that we will receive rain in a drought, and the list goes on and on. So if we are constantly praying for miracles, then why do we fear them? There are two reasons we fear miracles. We fear that they won’t come true and we fear that they will come true.
Fear they won't happen?
Sometimes we are afraid to ask for miracles because we are afraid they won’t happen. We are afraid that if we ask for a miracle and nothing happens then maybe God isn’t really there or maybe God doesn’t hear our prayers. We fear that if they don’t come true that maybe it is because we lack faith. If we are beseeching Heavenly Father on behalf of another and the miracle doesn’t happen, then we have somehow let that person down.
Sometimes it seems easier to not ask for the miracle and that way we cannot be let down. If we do not ask for miracles, then we do not have to worry about Heavenly Father not answering our prayers because we never pray in the first place.
Fear they will happen
Conversely, sometimes we fear that if we ask for miracles, the miracles will happen. Why would we fear miracles happening? Because, if we ask for a miracle and the miracle happens, then we have confirmation that our Heavenly Father is there and he answers prayer. If Heavenly Father is there and answers prayers, then what is our excuse for not following him? We can no longer live in uncertainty.
We can no longer use the excuse that we lack the faith to follow the commandments, because with each miracle that happens we come to know that our Heavenly Father is there and answers prayers. Once we know he is there, we are now accountable. We are accountable to follow his commandments, we are accountable to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, and we are accountable to continue to call down the powers of Heaven for ourselves and others.
Fear Not
So if there is so much to fear about miracles, should we just cease to call down miracles from heaven. Should we avoid calling on the powers of our Heavenly Father? President Hinckley answered this question in his talk, “Fear Not; Only Believe.”
In this talk, President Hinckley exhorts us to “Believe in God, the Father of us all… Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God who condescended to come into the world to save mankind… Believe in yourselves and in your capacity to do something worthwhile… Believe in the power and majesty of prayer… Believe in goodness, my dear young friends… Believe in education.”
We invite everyone “Do not fear; only believe.” (Luke 8:50). We live in a time for miracles and as we believe in miracles we can call down the powers of heaven to bless others and grow closer to the Savior.
